Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has removed four board members at the school district where a 2018 campus massacre occurred. DeSantis on Friday issued an executive order suspending Broward County school board members Patricia Good, Donna Korn, Ann Murray and Laurie Rich Levinson. DeSantis says they have shown a “pattern of emboldening unacceptable behavior.” The removals came one week after they were recommended by a grand jury investigating events surrounding the murder of 17 at Parkland's Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. The panel found that the district had misspent money that was supposed to go to a school safety program. Levinson last week called the findings “a political hatchet job.”
The Treasury Department faces pushback from the cryptocurrency industry over sanctions imposed on a virtual currency mixing firm. The firm is accused of helping launder billions of dollars — with some funds going to North Korean hackers. Earlier this month, the Treasury Department imposed sanctions on the firm, Tornado Cash, which allegedly helped to launder more than $7 billion worth of virtual currency since its creation in 2019. Mixing services combine various digital assets, including potentially illegally obtained funds and legitimately obtained funds, to keep origins of the funds secret. Advocates say the sanctions open the door to limiting usage of privacy software.
An autopsy report on the death of country singer Naomi Judd obtained by The Associated Press Friday confirmed what family members have already said about how she died. The 76-year-old singer killed herself with a gun on April 30 at her home in Tennessee. That was the day before she and daughter Wynonna Judd were inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. The family has spoken about Naomi Judd's struggles with mental illness. In a statement released Friday, they said she was being treated for PTSD and bipolar disorder, which explains prescription medications that were detected in her system.

FIFA has lifted a suspension of India’s soccer federation. It ensures the country can host the Under-17 Women’s World Cup in October. The move was expected this week after India’s Supreme Court handed back control of the national soccer federation to its administration. That restored management of the body to soccer officials as FIFA wanted. Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul vowed to aggressively prosecute anyone who threatens, harasses or intimidates election workers in the key swing state this fall. Kaul told The Associated Press in an interview that harassing election workers is an attack on the American system of government. Municipal clerks across Wisconsin have raised concerns about threats and intimidation as the November election approach. The attorney general said he plans to launch a public relations campaign stressing that harassing election clerks is a crime and informing how people can report incidents quickly. He also plans to coordinate with the Wisconsin Elections Commission.

Some international legal scholars say Russia’s attack on a Ukrainian train station that killed more than 20 people this week is the latest in a series of strikes on the country’s railway system that may be war crimes. Russia has offered little evidence to back up its claim that Ukrainian troops were the target of its attack on the Chaplyne railway station on Wednesday. War crimes experts said Thursday the attack reveals Russians are deliberately targeting civilians in a strategic manner. An AP reporter on the ground in Chaplyne saw no evidence Ukrainian troops were among those killed in the attack.
North Carolina’s Rules Review Commission has rejected two temporary rule changes recommended last week by the state Board of Elections that would have tightened restrictions for partisan poll watchers in the November elections. The decision follows a unanimous elections board vote to more clearly outline the code of conduct for party-appointed election observers in response to more than a dozen reported conduct violations during the state’s May primaries. Though the elections board approved tightening restrictions on poll watchers with bipartisan support on Aug. 16, the decision required final approval from the rules commission, a 10-member panel appointed by the Republican-controlled state legislature.

A federal judge has struck down one of Texas’ few remaining firearm restrictions, finding a law that barred adults under the age of 21 from carrying a handgun was unconstitutional. U.S. District Judge Mark Pittman in Fort Worth on Thursday ruled that a state law prohibiting most 18- to 20-year-olds from carrying a handgun violates the Second Amendment and cannot be enforced. He stayed the ruling for 30 days. The decision came in a case brought last year by a gun rights advocacy group and a man and a woman who argued they should be able to carry handguns for protection.

The U.S. and China have reached a preliminary agreement to allow U.S. regulators to inspect the audits of China-based companies whose stocks are traded on U.S. exchanges. In a long-festering dispute, U.S. regulators have threatened to boot a number of Chinese companies off U.S. exchanges if China didn’t permit inspections. The deal was announced Friday. Securities and Exchange Commission Chairman Gary Gensler said “The proof will be in the pudding.” If it does work out, the agreement means U.S. investors could maintain access to shares of important Chinese companies while at the same time being protected by the integrity of the companies’ audits.
Kentucky lawmakers have passed a measure injecting nearly $213 million into a flood-ravaged region of Appalachia. The votes came during a special session devoted to assisting portions of eastern Kentucky with the mammoth challenge of recovering from the disaster. The House passed the measure 97-0 Friday. It sent the assistance package to the Senate, which passed the bill a short time later. The measure now goes to Gov. Andy Beshear, who convened the special session. The relief measure is seen as an initial installment of support until lawmakers reconvene in January, when they will assess the region's ongoing needs.
A 2-year-old Missouri boy has died after hiding under a sink during a house fire. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports firefighters found Elijah Martinez unconscious and brought him to the hospital after his Florissant, Missouri, house caught fire Wednesday. He died later that day. His parents and 7- and 4-year-old brothers escaped and were treated for minor smoke inhalation. Officials have not yet announced the suspected cause of the fire but say it was accidental. Martinez's cousin says he loved digging in the dirt, playing with toy trucks and hugs.
Court documents show the man suspected of fatally shooting an Oklahoma deputy sheriff and wounding another also fired at but missed a third deputy. A probable cause affidavit alleges Benjamin Plank fatally shot Oklahoma County Deputy Bobby Swartz, wounded deputy Mark Johns and shot at the third deputy on Monday as they tried to serve him with eviction papers in Oklahoma City. Plank remains jailed without bond and no attorney is listed for him. Gov. Kevin Stitt has ordered U.S. and state flags to fly at half-staff in honor of Swartz and Osage County Sheriff's Capt. William Hargraves, who died in an automobile collision last Thursday.

Eastern Kentucky defensive back Marquae Kirkendoll has been charged with robbing a postal carrier in New Mexico and suspended from the team. According to documents filed in federal court in New Mexico this week, the 21-year-old Kirkendoll was also charged with stealing a key from the carrier used to open mail bags and lock boxes, as well as brandishing a gun, aiding and abetting, and conspiracy. Kirkendoll transferred from New Mexico to Eastern Kentucky in January. His lawyer, Adele Burt Brown, did not immediately return a message seeking comment.. Also charged in the Jan. 18 robbery was another former New Mexico player, Rayshawn Boyce.
