A LAWYER from Ferndown will be setting off on a 500-mile fundraiser this weekend to help tackle the oxygen crisis in India.

Summer Abrahams, 43, will be walking 16 miles everyday to raise money for oxygen and oxygen cylinders to support those with Covid-19 in India.

A devastating second wave of coronavirus in India has seen hospitals and crematoriums overwhelmed and widespread shortages of oxygen and medicines.

Summer wants to use her time before and after work to tackle the oxygen shortage by fundraising.

Summer said: "The sheer scale of the crisis is so terrible. I have been reading so much about the situation in India and it’s just sad news every day. I read that India only has enough oxygen for 40 per cent of their cases, so 60 per cent of people are going without. Oxygen is such a basic thing, and no one can survive without it.

"If there’s anything I can do, like this big challenge, I will do it to help."

The length of the challenge is equivalent to walking from London to Paris and back.

She will officially start the challenge on Saturday, May 15 and hopes to complete it by Sunday, June 13.

Summer will walk eight miles every morning from 5.30am and eight and a half miles every evening from 5.30pm.

Summer said: "£830 provides enough high-flow oxygen in a concentrator to 550 people, and although I hope I raise far more than this, it is a start.

"I understand Virgin Atlantic are flying oxygen supplies over for free and with enough donations, I hope what I raise will go over to India in mid June to alleviate some pressure on at least one hospital who receive the oxygen.

"I hope that people will put their hands in their pockets and donate an amount, however small, so all the pounds and pennies add up. This is my little bit to help make the crisis marginally better."
