A local organization focused on giving a space to those with special needs will be participating at the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame’s annual Labor Day Car Show on Saturday, Sept. 3.

The Special Needs Apostolate, founded by Anne and Tony Mancini, is based out of Dawson County’s Christ the Redeemer Catholic Church and will host a free event at the Main Street Park Pavilion as well as a 3K Walk with Christ at the park.

The event, which includes music and games, is part of the SNA’s efforts to increase their visibility to anyone in the local community who may have a special needs child or who may want to learn more about the organization.

Tony Mancini was able to work with GRHOF Director Cindy Elliott — an attendee of Christ the Redeemer — and the local Knights of Columbus chapter to set up the SNA’s presence at the upcoming car show.

“We want to make sure people understand this is not just for Catholics. It’s for everyone,” Mancini said. “It’s a great opportunity to showcase what we’re doing and let more of the community know.” The SNA is open to anyone in the community who may have a special needs child. While the music and games part of the event — beginning at 10:30 a.m. — is free and will also have some food for the children, there is a $3 entry fee for the 9 a.m. 3K Walk with Christ that will include a hotdog, chips and a drink.

The SNA event will be part of the larger car show event that is set to draw in many north Georgia car owners and enthusiasts.

With gates opening at 8 a.m. and judging to begin an hour later, the car show will include 15 different awards — with four of them yielding cash prizes.

Registration for vehicles is currently $25 until Aug. 29 and will be $30 from that date. The fee for a vendor or craft space is $250.
